Hi everyone. My name is Kristen and I currently live in Arizona. I am pursuing a Master's Degree in Teaching and Leadership. This is the last course I need as I pursue my degree, however I am planning to complete a practicum following this course. I am currently a Marketing and Entrepreneurship Teacher at our local public high school. I am also the lead for a career exploration course and the mentor to new employees. If I had to choose a life scripture as it applies to the role that I am in it would have to be 1 Peter 5:3, "not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock" (ESV). My goal is to lead in a selfless way that provides an example to those that are under my charge. I enjoy doing anything with my family as well as gardening and taking of my chickens and ducks and am love the I am looking forward to the opportunity to apply all of the information I have gathered working towards the completion of this degree to help give confidence to the teachers that I mentor and to create tools to help teachers that are interested in integrating technology deeper into their lessons. I have a passion for finding ways to meet students where they are and gain their interest to ensure that they are gaining all that they can from instruction. If my life were a movie the star that would play me would be Jennifer Garner. She has a tendency to play roles that are quirky and fun, she is kind, and still no nonsense when it comes to getting things done. I am ever the optimist with a tendency to be more realistic as I grow older but strive to never lose the optimism that makes me, me. Jennifer Garner usually plays a fun but classy lady, and for those reasons I would choose her to play me in a movie. I look forward to getting to know all of you better throughout this course. Have a blessed day!
Very nice to meet you Kristen,
ReplyDeleteI have never traveled to Arizona, I actually haven't been any further west than Tennessee, I tend to stay on the east coast when I travel. :) How exciting that this is your last course! Congratulations I know you are very excited to start the practicum part of your degree. I find it interesting that you teach an Entrepreneurship course, do you find your number of student enrollments are increasing or decreasing? I am just curious if the younger generations are interested in owning and creating their own businesses. Your verse is spot on for our type of career where we are modeling and mentors to new teachers or for me teachers that aren't as strong in technology use. I think the most important thing is the "not domineering" sometimes our position can be the foundation to someone becoming a Christian, if we automatically give an impression of dominance then why would they want to hear anything about Christ? My grandmother always had chickens they were always so fun to take care of, and you can't beat free eggs. I love Jennifer Garner and I agree she is quirky and fun as I am sure you are. I look forward to working with you these next eight weeks!
Hi Kristen,
ReplyDeleteI agree that helping teachers to create tools to meet students where they are is so important. For many who have not been daily exposed to business and industry are not aware of how fast the world is changing and getting smaller. Technology can be intimidating to those who have not grown up with it unless they have been a daily part of the evolution. While technology can be used for good or evil, the more that children are taught to be ethical and good citizens with technology will be more and more important as they grow.
Your work with marketing and entrepreneurship sounds very interesting. We need more students to understand the importance of entrepreneurship. There are not as many opportunities for kids to engage in business ventures as there were when I was growing up. Cities that squash kid’s attempts at business with things like lemonade stands need be required to take a course in entrepreneurship before they decide to regulate them.
Back in the late 70’s, I took a college course in marketing and our professor used the book The American Way of Death by Jessica Mitford as the text. It is an expose on the funeral industry marketing practices and even though I did not know about project-based instruction back then, we divided into groups and developed a cemetery location with a marketing plan. Our group did one around a Disney park theme and got the most points.
I’m with you on the simple life. With all of the technology, we must not forget how to do and enjoy the simple things in life. Gardening, canning and other things like woodworking and sewing clothes are becoming a lost art. We used to live in the country in Illinois and had a 10- acre fruit farm. We still enjoy cultivating fruit on a smaller scale with apples, cherries, blueberries and grapes along with our garden vegetables.
Hi Kristen, in Arizona! That is wonderful that this is your last course in the program, and congratulations to you! I love that you have chickens and ducks! Your movie star choice is a great, as I am a huge Jennifer Garner fan! Your verse that guides your work is a great selection, and is a reminder of what godly leadership looks like! The Lord was such a humble, selfless leader as He walked the earth, and for us He provides a perfect model of how to be better leaders.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to getting to know you more in this course! Have a great day!
